7 Surprising Skin Sins: Habits That Keep You From Getting Rid Of Acne

As beauty veterans, we've heard the often-repeated good skin care habits one should follow for a clear complexion. And, we're even familiar with the more obscure tips, like applying toothpaste or a crushed aspirin to your face to reduce acne blemish (does that work?). But we were surprised - or even shocked -- by some skin sins everyone commits, that we originally thought might be good for acne-prone skin. Even if you are using the best acne treatment, these seven habits can wreak havoc upon your skin. So here they are, the 7 bad skin care habits you - yes, you - are committing on a daily basis. Once you know them, you can fix them - easy!
1. Removing oil from your face -
Some essential oils are anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, so they fantastic for killing bacteria that's causing the breakouts. Using the right oil on your face can be actually beneficial even for those with oily skin that is easily stripped by harsh acne treatments. The key is to get high quality oil with a molecular structure that can penetrate into your skin and not clog your pores. They can also have other benefits of healing and dark spot reducing. These include coconut, jojoba and tea tree, rosemary, bergamot, and others.
2. Cleansing too often -
Sounds - crazy, but hear us out: Over-cleansing stimulates the sebum glands, which prompts more oil production, which can create more breakouts. This especially includes cleansing with scrubbing particles or rotating skin brushes. Some acne treatment and oil-reducing cleansers are just too harsh and strip the skin. Wash only with a gentle wash and dab your skin, gently, to dry. Be sure to use a non-comedogenic moisturizer each time you cleanse.
3. Using rotating Skin Brushes -
The television commercials make you think these brushes provide beneficial cleansing for acne-prone skin. In reality, exfoliating too much with these brushes can cause inflammation and aggravate your acne. Instead, gently exfoliate with a product containing a BHA (beta hydroxy acid), such as salicylic acid from willow bark, which is great for acne prone skin. If you love your rotating skin brush, only use once per week to every other week if you are prone to breakouts.
4. Using a magnification mirror -
We all love them, right? But looking too closely to things no one else can see can cause us to pick our skin - which can aggravate an acne condition and even cause dark spots and scarring. These mirrors are great, but be careful how you use them.
5. Touching your face -
Your hands, cell phone, make-up brushes - are all carriers of p.acne and other bacteria. Keep these items clean with gentle cleansers or anti-bacterial wipes. Try not to touch your face throughout the day - especially fight the urge to touch your blemishes unless you have freshly washed hands.
6. Using mineral make-ups -
Mineral make-ups are widely recommended for acne-prone skin -- however, if the one you are using contains bismuth oxychloride - watch out! Bismuth oxychloride can be a major skin irritant, and is also suspected to acne flare-ups and cystic acne, in particular. There are plenty of options that do not contain this ingredient in every price range.
7. Wearing the latest workout wear -
If you suffer from body acne, sweating in synthetic clothing may be a contributor. Synthetic materials can harbor bacteria, and when fit tight to the body does not allow the body to breathe. This can cause a type of breakout called acne mechanica. If you suffer from body acne, ditch synthetic athletic clothing and under-garments and go for 100% cotton.
